Worn by themselves or over tees, camisoles and slip dresses are all the rage this year! With Pensée, we wanted to reinvent this classic piece with a unique twist: a beautiful wrapped back.

Feminine and light, the Pensée dress is a sharp take on lingerie-inspired fashion. Its delicate straps and cinched waist are undeniably romantic, contrasting with the modern, sleek lines of its neckline and wrapped back. As a slip dress or a camisole, it fits many occasions, from sunny vacations to summer weddings.

While it can be worn over a shirt in the spring, Pensée is also perfect for the hottest summer days. Since its design is not compatible with a regular bra, we focused especially on the neckline to give both drama and coverage. Darts extending down from the straps flatter the bust and prevent any gaping, while a partial lining brings extra opacity to thin fabrics.

Its pretty wrapped back is composed of a panel overlapping a dress that is sewn on both sides: no risk of showing too much, even if it’s windy!

The camisole version of Pensée features a slightly cinched straight cut, the wrapped panel being simply tied on the side. Its loose silhouette allows it to be worn as well tucked in a high-waist as over pants. You can also mix and match versions to create a loose dress or a belted top.

Pensée is ranked as an advanced pattern (4/5), because it requires drapey and slippery fabric and features bias-cut edges that need to be handled very carefully. That being said, nothing is stopping you from jumping in if you’re an intermediate sewist! Just remember to measure your pieces regularly throughout the project to make sure they haven’t stretched 😉 .

Get the Pensée dress and cami in our online shop in paper (sizes 34 to 46) format, or in PDF format up to size 52! More on the recommended fabrics for this pattern in a few days.
